The Bridge (2)

The Bridge

I wander alone down this road
My cart has one wheel that wobbles
What belongs to me is what you see
Don’t try to take it from me or squabble

Coming to a broken concrete bridge
The only way to get past the river
Up ahead a clown jumped up and down
Showing it’s safe but the river made him shiver

What do you see when you read
Two men at their end of their future
I see what happens when two men don’t heed
Who have nothing to show for their adventures

Satan’s Storm

Not very often does the river straighten
But when it does its attributed to Satan
The thirst of the ground and the drought forgotten
Plus the acres of failed crops and dead cotton

All eyes on the now and never on the was
It’s easier to blame Satan than the real cause
Waters receding now, the river takes form
Rain never made it here, it Was Satan’s storm

Holiday Weekend

The morning’s dew hung heavy at the river edge

The sun at least an hour away from rising to warm the bones

Coleman’s mantle lit the bank and warmed the hands

Dressed in layers we were able to warm ourselves while setting up camp

We brought kindling and the first small logs to ready the fire

While I walked along the bank collecting more for the fire

Being thirteen I was an old hand at getting ready

To put the first worm baited pole in the water

Good times on the Holiday weekends like the 4th of July are

Some of my fondest memories of summer.
