An Empty Room

It wasn’t always so
Life and laughter emanated bright
Miles of smiles and tears of fear
And heartbreak but always
Recovered by night
Stories and joking
Brought men from near and far
Around the table in patio chairs
Just outside his room (a sober bar)
Always was a diet Shasta
In his refrigerator for you or me
The table filled with outdoor catalogs
And ashtrays
Always kept empty
His heart was giving
And his brain was keen
He would always help
When you were in between
The room’s now empty
He passed away
All debts and tears forgiven
As of yesterday
